Yeola, Maharashtra
The Paithani takes its name from the town of Paithan in Maharashtra, where the weave has been made for close to two thousand years, and is today woven chiefly in Yeola. Its motifs are not printed or embroidered but woven by hand — coloured silk and real zari interlocked into the cloth thread by thread, so the flowers, birds and animals live within the weave itself. The animal figures set within the pallu's zari lattice and the Muniya (parrot) temple border are among the oldest and most prized of Paithani motifs, each worked by hand with individual bobbins over many months at the loom.
