A very unique twill silk Tanchoi Banarasi saree in muted olive grey. The body is woven all over with a delicate tree-of-life motif — fine branching trees, blossoms and little deer in ivory and antique gold — with the soft, painterly quality of a Japanese silk painting. The pallu deepens into a rich gold paisley panel, and a black-and-gold floral border with tassels finishes the drape. Understated, artistic and quite unlike anything else. Blouse included.

Tanchoi is a Banarasi weaving technique with no floats on the reverse — the extra weft is woven densely into the ground, giving a smooth satin-like surface that carries fine detail beautifully. That precision is what lets this saree render a whole painterly landscape of branching trees and deer across the silk, echoing the delicacy of Japanese brush painting rather than the usual bold Banarasi motifs.
