What makes a saree a genuine Kanjeewaram?
A genuine Kanjeewaram (Kanjivaram) silk saree is hand-woven in and around Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu, using thick mulberry silk threads twisted with pure zari. The body and border are traditionally woven separately, on the same loom, then interlocked together — a technique unique to the region that gives Kanjeewaram borders their strength and contrast.
Is Kanjeewaram silk different from Banarasi silk?
Yes — Kanjeewaram is woven in Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu, using thicker mulberry silk and a heavier, more textured zari, giving it a stiffer drape and bold contrast borders. Banarasi silk is woven in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, typically in Katan silk with finer, more intricate zari brocade (Kadwa, Jangla, Tanchoi) and a softer drape.
How should I care for a Kanjeewaram silk saree?
Dry clean only, and store folded in soft muslin away from direct light and moisture to preserve the zari and silk sheen over time.
Do you ship Kanjeewaram sarees internationally?
